Pelni Records Shift in Travelers from Airplanes to Ships during Nataru 2024
Jakarta – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) Persero has noted a shift in travelers who were previously using airplanes to now opting for sea vessels. This trend was evident during the Nataru holiday in 2024, where the number of passengers did not significantly decrease compared to the previous year, despite Pelni’s fleet being reduced by one vessel due to the burning of the Motor Ship (KM) Umsini at the Soekarno-Hatta Port in Makassar last June.
Director of PT Pelni, Tri Andayani, stated that Pelni transported a total of 551,000 passengers during Nataru 2024, exceeding the initial target of 507,000. This figure surpassed the target set for the 2024 Nataru holiday by 8.7%.
Andayani explained that in 2023, Pelni had a total of 26 large passenger ships in operation during the holiday season. However, in 2024, with the KM Umsini out of service, the number of passenger ships decreased to 30.
Furthermore, Andayani also mentioned information from the Ministry of Transportation during the closing of the Nataru 2024 holiday, indicating a declining trend in travel among the public during the holiday season. Despite this trend, maritime transportation usage increased.
Andayani shared encounters with passengers who were traveling by ship for the first time in Bitung, Priok, and Surabaya. It was apparent that these passengers were accustomed to traveling by plane but chose to sail with Pelni this time.
The shift in travel preferences highlights the importance of adapting to changing consumer expectations and ensuring a seamless travel experience.
