Rolex Partners with SailGP: A Game-Changer in Sailing
In a groundbreaking move, SailGP has announced Rolex as the first title partner of its global sailing competition. This partnership marks a significant milestone for the self-proclaimed Formula 1 of sailing, elevating its status to new heights.
Historic Collaboration
The prestigious Swiss luxury watchmaker, Rolex, has joined forces with SailGP, solidifying their relationship that began during the championship’s inaugural season in 2019. The partnership is set to span the next decade, through 2034, with Rolex also continuing as the official timepiece of SailGP.
The Rolex SailGP Championship
With the backing of Rolex, SailGP’s series of events, starting with the 2025 season in Dubai, will now be known as the “Rolex SailGP Championship.” This rebranding signifies a new era of growth and development for the global sailing competition.
Thrilling Competition
SailGP’s global championship features a dozen national teams competing in high-speed 50-foot foiling catamarans, reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. The stakes are high, with teams vying for a $7 million grand prize, making it one of the most exhilarating events in the world of sailing.
Private Ownership Model
SailGP was established with a vision of transitioning to a private ownership model within its first five years. In the upcoming season, 10 out of 12 teams will be privately owned, paving the way for future teams to be independently owned and financed.
Wall Street Titans Backing the Sport
Notable figures from Wall Street, including Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison and Avenue Capital Group Chairman Marc Lasry, have shown their support for SailGP. Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund led an investor group that acquired the U.S. team for $35 million in 2023, highlighting the growing interest and investment in the sport.
Expanding Global Reach
SailGP’s popularity is on the rise, with major sponsors such as Red Bull, Emirates, and Deutsche Bank coming on board. The league’s broadcast reach spans 212 territories worldwide, with viewership increasing by 48% year over year during its fourth season’s 13 race events.
Engaging New Audiences
SailGP is not only attracting affluent participants and spectators but also engaging a new generation of racing fans. With new broadcast agreements in Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Spain, the league is set to expand its reach and appeal to a wider audience.
Exciting Times Ahead
As SailGP enters its fifth season with Rolex as its title partner, the future looks bright for the sport of sailing. With a dynamic mix of high-speed racing, top-tier competition, and strategic partnerships, SailGP is poised to make waves in the world of sailing.
